Untitled (Assignment 3), March 2018.

In a coffee shop, there are different versions of reality. From the surface level, there are appears to be pure aesthetics, sometimes sterile minimalism, sometimes hip eclecticismcism, sometimes pretentious craft, sometimes frivolous specialty.

How the space differs, however, is function for the visitor.

  • Is the coffee shop a space for gulping down coffee, caffeinating the business-person or student? Is it for sitting behind a laptop, dissociating?
  • Is the space a place for building an image? Is it for appearing as local, taking shots for Instagram and partaking in generational trends?
  • Is the space a meeting place? An intersection for friends new and old? A medium for conversation?
  • Is the space a display of an art? A complex cup of flavors crafted by the intentional collaboration of farmers, roasters, and baristas?

A coffee shop functions in many parallel realities at once, none more false, none more true.
