Video Project: Rough Cut

•  How did you intend to visually communicate your themes/ideas to the viewer in terms of the formal qualities of your video (i.e., describe the pace/flow of the video, the types of imagery used and why, the relevance of the audio, etc.).

I used the type of imagery that is intended to communicate the passage of great lengths of time. The space is meant to appear dreamy and drawn out. The left side of the screen get progressively faster, as the clock ticks, giving a sense of anxiety as time runs out. This contrasts the content, which shows no feeling of anxiety, but instead, dreamy indifference.

• Describe the content-based research you engaged with. Without discussing any expressive aspects of the video, discuss how this research informed the production of your work and helped you to critically engage with your ideas.

In my life, I put a lot of value on the term “Memento Mori,” meaning “Remember that you must die.” This is a Christian Baroque art historical term that refers to still life painting including subjects like skulls, wilting flowers, fruits, moths, hourglasses, and burnt out candles. These paintings are meant to be reminders of the fleeting of life. People must live life, repent, and reject earthly possessions as they remember that life inevitably ends. While I put so much emphasis on this idea, I also spend so much of my time on my phone, watching Netflix, and just sitting around doing nothing. I waste so much of my life which I preach so much about living. I wanted to visually represent this disconnect while giving the sense that life is running out.
