Her Take: (Re)Thinking Masculinity (Blog Review 3)
The seven women of VII Photo Agency have staged a group exhibition called Her Take: (Re)Thinking Masculinity at Photoville in Brooklyn, New York. Each of the seven projects explores a topic of masculinity. Several of the photographers create conceptual work for the first time as they discuss the female nude and the male gaze. The project brings to mind a question a power dynamics between men and women and hopes to create conversations around this. This exhibition is created within the photojournalism industry after several allegations of sexual harassment and gender bias and hopes to point to a future of safety and inclusivity. As each photographer approaches masculinity differently, the artists emphasize a woman’s way of seeing the world. I chose this article to review, because I think that it is interesting to see emerging artists seek meaning in their work for perhaps the first time. By sharing a passion for equality and empowerment, these women were able to create an ensemble of very different yet interrelated works to explore an idea. I especially like the way that they humanize men to learn more about the dynamics between genders rather than to only explore women.
