Maggie Callahan (Blog Review 5)

Maggie Callahan, a photo-based artist from Atlanta GA, photographed a series of diptychs exploring the physical nature of photography by capturing fruits and vegetables and the residue they leave behind. By doing so, she captures “what no longer exists.” Callahan is interested in the fabrication of images and the trace such displays leave behind. Photography is able to capture experiences and situations like evidence or stains. I liked reading about Callahan’s work as my own work this semester explores a type of residue and decay. I also liked this article because of the connection to the theoretical texts in Emerling’s Photography: Theory and History. The works speaks to the ideas of simulacra and the index and questions the nature of the medium itself.
