"Intimacy and Art Embrace in Barbican's Modern Couples" features an exhibition about the power of romantic relationships in inspiring the creation of art. The exhibition in London includes the works of modern artists like Claude Cahun, Marcel Moore, Dora Maar, and Pablo Picasso spanning from painting and sculpture to literature, dance, music, architecture, photography, and ephemera. Each room of the exhibit features a different couple to allow visitors an immersion in individual encounters with modern love. The show interrogates the relationship between artist and muse while giving autonomy and agency to the woman artist and woman muse. The exhibition shows collaboration and companionship, and relationships from those devoted and respectful to those tragic and troubled. This article caught my eye as I feel that love and art always seem to intersect. As a form of expression, art is often catalyzed by love. Instead of looking at this topic from the surface level, this article explores an exhibit that intentionally looks at the potency of human relationships and the respect that can flow into creative output.
