Work in Progress Critique 1 // Photo 2
• What was/is the initial idea, how is it evolving?
I’ve been
thinking a lot about “home.” Where is “home?” Who is “home?” Why? And more
specifically, how do we treat our homes? Why do we leave them early in the
morning or before going out at night in a state of disarray and chaos? What do
we leave behind at home? If a place is, in fact, “home,” why do we leave and
why do we leave what we leave there? I am interested in the residue we leave
behind in the places we call home. Through a series
of still life photography, I hope to get to the bottom of any of these questions.
I will explore what home means to me, how I treat my homes and what marks I
leave behind on them. Aesthetically--and as a result of how I naturally photograph--I have made the imagery feel found, a
glimpse into that which typically goes unnoticed. I do not
intend to use artificial lighting or particularly noticeable editing
techniques. I might experiment with different ways of presenting this kind of
imagery within frames or even paired with text in the future.
• Why do you feel the images you selected to print for this critique are your strongest, from among the group of new images? (i.e., what was your criteria for selection)
I liked these photos from those that I took, because they embody the day-to-day. These photos captured what home looks like when it's not as pretty, framing that which is left behind.
• What specific questions do you have about the work in terms of how someone other than yourself might interpret the imagery?
Is there anything that I could do differently to most effectively provoke thought on the subject of "home?" How can I get people to wonder about how they treat their homes?
