Work in Progress Critique 4 // Photo 2

  •  What was/is the initial idea, how is it evolving?
The initial idea for this project was to capture found still life images of home. These images depict that traces left behind in the morning or afternoon, residue of living, a moment caught in-between. This has evolved into a body of still lives that still depict this subject matter, but really embody the strangeness of the artifice of material culture and the residue that that leaves upon a space. All of this is to explore how we treat our homes, what we call home, and what relationship "home" has to "things."
  •  Why do you feel the images you selected to print for this critique are your strongest, from among the group of new images? (i.e., what was your criteria for selection)
I especially like how this set of images is composed. I have gotten lots of feedback on which compositions have been more successful than others, and have tried to emulate the previous photographs with more space and focus on detailed subject matter. Rather than trying to get everything in one shot, I have explored little details which still signify an accumulation and even abuse of belongings and space.
  • What specific questions do you have about the work in terms of how someone other than yourself might interpret the imagery?
How might I treat the images in Photoshop using adjustment layers to really get at my concept more strongly?

SCALED FINE PRINTS

  • Why do you feel the selected images most strongly convey your conceptual content?
The images I chose represent a close look at the everyday accumulation and abandonment of things in a space. While these too are a little less scattered and fleeting than some of my other images, there is a stillness that makes the images feel empty of human presence, a representation of the moments in-between.
  • How do you hope the formal treatment and scale impacts the interpretation?
I think that the scale and white borders allow for these images to be viewed more intimately. The white space makes it so that the works may be viewed individually, instead of continuously. The same way that each composition has a lot of empty space, the borders allow details to be viewed with a more conscious eye. This allows the viewer to more effectively rethink the reality of everyday.
